A little post inspired by Keri Smith’s “How to Feel Miserable as an Artist”. Unfortunately, not everything on this list can be avoided, especially if you’re multiply marginalised.
- Believe that there’s something wrong with you.
- Compare yourself to neurotypicals.
- Have no access to resources and supports that you need. (Unfortunately a reality for many Autistics.)
- Never indulge in or talk about your special interest.
- Suppress all your stims. (Sadly, not everyone has the privilege to stim freely in public.)
- Force yourself to endure sensory overload all the time.
- Never connect with other Autistic folks.
- Constantly seek validation from neurotypicals.
